Military Members and Spouses

Military families dedicate their lives to serving our country. We hope you continue your legacy and impact by teaching in a Georgia classroom.
This page provides information for military members and their spouses without a Georgia teaching certificate. If you hold teaching certification in a state other than Georgia, please see Out-of-State Teachers regarding interstate teaching certificate reciprocity.

Teaching Certification Options for Military Members & Spouses

  1. Apply to be a substitute teacher! This becomes a great way to see if teaching is the right fit for you while building relationships with local school system officials who can keep you in mind for future job openings.
  2. If you decide to pursue a full-time teaching job, share your interest with school district human resource departments and school principals. See the following map of Georgia to locate school human resource department websites and military base school liaisons.
  3. Ask the school district about their policies around hiring military members and spouses as teachers and if they have a staff person who can provide additional support during your job search and certification process. Military members and their spouses may be eligible to teach through a Military Support Provisional Certificate.
Additionally, some districts, especially those located near military bases or in high-needs areas, may choose to use strategic waivers to employ members of the military and their spouses through a Clearance Certificate. Both certificate options have different requirements, so connect with the districts that interest you to see which option works best.
  4. Still need help navigating Georgia’s teacher certification process for military families? Check out the following resources for military spouses and military members.

*Please note that the federal Troops to Teachers program is sunset, but the Georgia Professional Standards Commission Military Support Unit is still available to assist with filling educator vacancies with eligible veterans. Contact [email protected] for more information.
